This site was born from a powerful legend. It is said that in 533 AD, the Virgin Mary appeared in a dream to Bishop Pomponio, instructing him to build a church where a pagan temple dedicated to Diana once stood. But its name, "Pietrasanta" (Holy Stone), derives from a relic housed within: a stone engraved with a cross, which was said to have the power to grant indulgence to those who kissed it.
The church you admire today is the triumph of 17th-century Neapolitan Baroque. Fanzago envisioned it with a Greek cross plan and a magnificent dome, creating a theatrical space designed to astonish and welcome the light.
But Pietrasanta is not a monument frozen in time. It is a living organism. After years of restoration, it has reopened its doors not only as a place of worship but as one of the city's most dynamic cultural hubs. Today, it is the "Polo Culturale Pietrasanta," a prestigious stage where ancient art engages in dialogue with major international exhibitions, events, and performances.
And the discovery continues underground. The church houses a subterranean archaeological path, the Lapis Museum, which allows you to literally walk through the city's foundations, from the Greek-Roman era to Second World War air-raid shelters.
To visit Pietrasanta is to experience the essence of Naples: a city capable of transforming a pagan temple into an Early Christian basilica, cladding it in Baroque splendour, and, finally, rebirthing it as the vibrant heart of contemporary culture.
