A practical guide to visiting the city and reaching its main attractions
ANM
ANM manages a major part of Naples’ public transport network: Metro Line 1, Metro Line 6, funicular railways, buses, trams, trolleybuses and the Alibus shuttle service.
Metro Line 1 – the metro of the city centre and the “Art Stations”
Line 1 is one of the most useful metro lines for visitors: it connects the northern districts of the city with the centre, passing through Vomero, the historic centre, the monumental area and the Central Station.
With Line 1, you can easily reach:
- Garibaldi / Central Station: railway arrivals, interchange with Line 2, Circumvesuviana/EAV trains and airport bus connections
- Duomo: Naples Cathedral area, Via dei Tribunali, San Gennaro, historic centre
- Università: Corso Umberto I, university district, access to Spaccanapoli and the old town
- Municipio: Maschio Angioino, Piazza Municipio, Molo Beverello, Port area, Palazzo San Giacomo
- Toledo: Via Toledo, Spanish Quarters, Galleria Umberto I, Teatro San Carlo, Piazza del Plebiscito
- Dante: Piazza Dante, Port’Alba, historic centre, the Decumani
- Museo: National Archaeological Museum of Naples, Galleria Principe, connection to Piazza Cavour
- Materdei: access to the Sanità district and more unconventional urban itineraries
- Vanvitelli / Quattro Giornate: Vomero district, shopping, access to funiculars and connections to Castel Sant’Elmo and Certosa di San Martino
Metro Line 6 – from the seafront to Fuorigrotta
Line 6 connects the Fuorigrotta district with Piazza Municipio.
It is useful for reaching:
- Municipio: monumental centre, Port, Molo Beverello, Maschio Angioino
- Chiaia / San Pasquale: shopping, urban walks, elegant district of the city
- Mergellina: seafront promenade, marina, ferry connections, walk towards Posillipo
- Mostra / Fuorigrotta: Mostra d’Oltremare exhibition centre, Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, event area
Funiculars – the easiest way to reach Vomero
The funicular railways connect the lower city with the hillside districts. They are particularly useful for reaching Vomero, Castel Sant’Elmo, Certosa di San Martino, Via Scarlatti, Piazza Vanvitelli and panoramic viewpoints.
Especially useful for visitors:
- Central Funicular: connects Via Toledo / Augusteo with Vomero
- Chiaia Funicular: connects the Chiaia district with Piazza Vanvitelli
- Montesanto Funicular: useful for reaching Vomero from Montesanto and getting close to San Martino
- Mergellina Funicular: connects Mergellina with the hillside area of Posillipo
Alibus – airport, station and port
For those arriving by air, Alibus provides a direct connection between Naples International Airport, Central Station and the Port of Naples.
EAV
EAV is the main operator for the Cumana, Circumflegrea, Circumvesuviana and MetroCampaniaNordEst railway lines.
Vesuvian lines – Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento and the Vesuvius area
These lines are particularly useful for visitors travelling to:
- Herculaneum: the archaeological site of Herculaneum and access routes to Mount Vesuvius
- Pompei Scavi: the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, one of the most visited sites in Campania
- Oplontis / Torre Annunziata: Vesuvian archaeological area
- Castellammare di Stabia: gateway to the Lattari Mountains and connections to Monte Faito
- Sorrento: access to the Sorrentine Peninsula and onward connections to the Amalfi Coast
Campania Express – tourist service to Sorrento, Pompeii and Herculaneum
During the tourist season, EAV also operates the Campania Express, designed specifically for visitors travelling along the Vesuvian coast.
The service connects Naples, Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento, offering:
- station and onboard assistance
- online booking and ticket purchase
- guaranteed reserved seating
Cumana and Circumflegrea – Phlegraean Fields, Pozzuoli and the western coast
The Phlegraean railway network includes two lines:
- the Cumana, running along the coast
- the Circumflegrea, serving inland areas
Both depart from Napoli Montesanto station.
They are useful for reaching:
- Montesanto / Pignasecca: historic centre, local market, interchange with Line 2 and the funicular
- Fuorigrotta / Mostra: event area, Mostra d’Oltremare, Maradona Stadium
- Bagnoli: Città della Scienza and the western district
- Pozzuoli: Rione Terra, Flavian Amphitheatre, port, seafront and the Phlegraean area
- Baia, Bacoli, Torregaveta: archaeological and coastal itineraries within the Phlegraean Fields
Connections to Mount Vesuvius and the Coast
For the Vesuvius area, UnicoCampania provides information about the Pompeii – Vesuvius shuttle service operated by EAVBUS, departing from Piazza Anfiteatro in Pompeii and reaching the crater area at an altitude of 1,000 metres.
For the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrentine Peninsula, the most practical option remains the EAV railway line to Sorrento, from where local connections continue towards the coastal towns.

- Daily ticket, convenient for multiple trips within one day
- Unico Alibus, for connections between the Airport, Central Station and Port

According to UnicoCampania, the Campania Artecard, depending on the selected option, may include travel on regional transport operators such as ANM, EAV and Trenitalia.
Tap & Go: how contactless payment works
With Tap & Go, passengers can access enabled transport services using a contactless payment card or a digital device such as a smartphone or smartwatch.
UnicoCampania supports American Express, PagoBancomat, Mastercard, Maestro, Visa and VPay on EAV railway lines and enabled ANM services.
The process is simple:
- TAP IN: at the entrance, place the card or device on the reader
- TAP OUT: at the exit, use the same card or device to complete the journey
The system automatically calculates the correct fare based on the journey taken.
If the TAP OUT is not completed, the maximum fare for that route may be charged.
It is important to always use the same card or device when entering and exiting.
If you TAP IN with one card and TAP OUT with another, the system will register two separate journeys and may apply a double charge.
Even a physical card and the same card digitised on a smartphone may be recognised as two different payment methods.
Where Tap & Go is available
Tap & Go is available at EAV railway stations on the:
- Circumvesuviana
- Cumana
- Circumflegrea
- Aversa–Piscinola lines
It is also available on:
- ANM Metro Line 1
- enabled funicular railways
The service is active on Alibus in TAP IN mode only, while it is currently not available on other bus lines.
It is not available on Metro Line 2.
A practical note for visitors
To avoid mistakes, remember one simple rule:
with contactless payment, always enter and exit using the same card or device.
TAP IN at the start of the journey, TAP OUT at the end.
A small detail that helps the system calculate the correct fare and makes travelling around Naples easier—especially for those visiting the city for just a few days.
