Church of Saint Andrew of the Coachmen
Walking along Via dei Tribunali, the ancient artery that cuts through the heart of Naples, you come across countless testimonies of a devotion that never made class distinctions. A fascinating example is the small and austere Church of Sant'Andrea dei Cocchieri. The name itself is a wide-open window onto the daily life of viceregal and Baroque Naples: this place was, in fact, the spiritual refuge of the confraternity of the cocchieri (coachmen). They were the keepers of the nobles' secrets and the undisputed masters of the city's labyrinthine alleys, but here, before the altar of their church, they found an intimate dimension, seeking protection between one carriage ride and the next.
Incorporated into the dense row of historic buildings and characterized by a simple facade topped by a large lunette window, the little church experienced decades of oblivion. Yet, as always happens in Naples, history never ceases to surprise: thanks to the recent 2025 restoration works promoted by the UNESCO project for the Historic Center of Naples, this hidden gem is finally starting to breathe again. Sant'Andrea dei Cocchieri is today the symbol of a living city that heals its memories and reclaims its roots, reminding us that every guild, every trade, and every stone here has an ancient soul waiting to be rediscovered.
