- From ancient Rome to Baroque Naples
The church rises on the remains of the Temple of the Dioscuri (1st century AD), whose towering Corinthian columns still dominate the façade today. A powerful symbol of Naples’ urban stratification, where Christian sacred space is built directly upon the ancient pagan city.
The current structure is largely the result of a 17th-century reconstruction led by the Theatine Order, who transformed it into one of the most significant examples of Neapolitan Baroque. Despite damage from the 1688 earthquake and World War II bombings, the church retains a strong and dramatic presence.
- Art and architecture
Inside, the eye is drawn to the breadth of the nave and the richness of its decorative program:
_ monumental Baroque architecture shaped by the Theatines
paintings by leading figures of the Neapolitan artistic scene, including Massimo Stanzione, Francesco Solimena, and Giovan Battista Beinaschi
_ side altars that reflect centuries of devotion and noble patronage
Despite the losses suffered over time, San Paolo Maggiore still preserves a significant artistic heritage, offering a vivid glimpse into Naples’ Baroque age.
- The Neapolitan Nativity Museum
Within the complex, the Neapolitan Nativity Museum celebrates one of the city’s most iconic traditions. Here, the nativity scene is more than a religious representation — it becomes a social narrative.
Everyday life unfolds in miniature: artisans, markets, gestures, and faces recreate the spirit of Naples across time. The works on display, ranging from the 18th century to contemporary creations, reveal the evolution of an art form that uniquely blends sacred and secular elements.
- Curiosities to discover
The surviving columns are among the most visible remains of Roman Neapolis in the city.
The church was a major center of the Theatine Order in Naples.
The Neapolitan nativity tradition is considered one of the most original cultural expressions in Europe.
A journey through layers of time
San Paolo Maggiore is a place where Naples reveals its deepest nature: a city built upon itself, where different eras coexist in a single space. Between Roman ruins, Baroque scenography and living traditions, the experience becomes a journey through history, art and identity.
