Mercadante Theatre

Overlooking the wide expanse of Piazza Municipio, just steps from the imposing Maschio Angioino, the Teatro Mercadante is not merely a stage, but a true intellectual salon open to the city.

Teatro Mercadante

Founded in 1779 at the request of King Ferdinand IV under the name Teatro del Fondo, this 18th-century architectural gem was originally conceived to host opera buffa, welcoming over the years absolute masterpieces and even the genius of Mozart.

Through revolutions, transformations and rebirths, the building gradually changed its identity, taking the name of the renowned composer Saverio Mercadante and becoming the undisputed temple of spoken theatre in the city.

Today, as the beating heart of the Teatro Stabile di Napoli – Teatro Nazionale, crossing its threshold means leaving behind the pace of metropolitan life and entering a captivating collective ritual.
Amid the refined red velvet, mirrors and gilded stuccoes of its auditorium, you do not simply watch a performance—you become part of an ongoing and passionate dialogue between great classics and contemporary drama, in a Naples that never stops questioning itself and the world.
