Described as "a small concentration of treasures," this church is one of those spaces that escape the hurried visitor, but that reward those who seek the authentic soul of the city.
Founded in the 15th century as the seat of a congregation dedicated to the saint, the church has witnessed centuries of history and devotion. Although remodelled in the eighteenth century, its atmosphere retains an intimate charm. It is not the grandeur that strikes you, but the density of the artworks it houses.
Crossing the threshold, the gaze is immediately drawn to the main altarpiece. It is here that one can admire a splendid Madonna with angels and Saints Bonaventura, Francis, and Louis of Toulouse, a canvas signed by one of the great masters of Neapolitan painting from the late 16th and early 17th centuries: Fabrizio Santafede.
But it is not the only gem. Among the works housed here, an intense Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata, attributed to Giacomo Sanso, also stands out.
San Bonaventura is the perfect metaphor for Naples: a place that, even in its most hidden folds and "unknown to most," reveals a stratified and unexpected beauty. A stop here is a gift for those who wish to explore the city beyond the usual routes, in search of pure wonder.
