To make the most of your experience, it is advisable to familiarise yourself in advance with local regulations, transport access rules and urban coexistence guidelines before arriving.
Basic rules in public spaces
Within the municipal territory of Naples:
- A leash is mandatory in public areas.
- You must carry a muzzle, to be used if necessary.
- Owners are responsible for cleaning up after their dogs.
- In public parks, access is generally permitted with a leash, in compliance with designated areas and posted signage. In some historic gardens or specific areas, restrictions or prohibitions may apply.
- Guide dogs for visually impaired persons are granted access to all public places.
Public transport with pets
In Naples, it is possible to use public transport with your dog, subject to certain regulations.
Metro and funicular railways
- Animals are permitted:
- If small-sized, preferably in a pet carrier.
- If medium or large-sized, on a leash and wearing a muzzle.
Urban buses
- Transport is allowed under the same conditions as for the metro and funicular railways. In the event of overcrowding, staff may restrict access for safety reasons.
Taxis
Transporting animals is generally possible, but acceptance may be at the driver’s discretion (with the exception of guide dogs, which must be accepted).
It is always advisable to check the most up-to-date conditions on the official websites of the city’s public transport operators before travelling.
Museums and cultural sites
In most museums, monumental churches and archaeological sites in the city, pets are not permitted, with the exception of guide dogs.
At present, one notable exception is the Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro, where access with animals is allowed.
For outdoor events, festivals and public celebrations, attendance with pets is generally permitted, unless otherwise specified by the organisers.
Churches open for worship
In churches, access for companion dogs may be subject to restrictions, particularly during religious services. Permission can vary depending on the guidance of the parish priest or the church authorities.
Monumental churches with museum management
When a church also operates as a museum site with controlled access or ticketing, pets are generally not permitted, with the exception of guide dogs.
It is always advisable to check on site or through official channels before your visit.
Bars, restaurants and supermarkets
As regards bars and restaurants, dogs are generally allowed, but admission is at the discretion of the establishment owner and subject to current health and hygiene regulations.
It is good practice to check before entering, especially for indoor areas.
Outdoor seating areas and terraces are often more accommodating, provided that the dog is kept on a leash and under control.
In supermarkets and grocery stores, however, pets are generally not permitted for health and hygiene reasons, with the exception of certified guide or assistance dogs.
In any case, it is always advisable to:
- keep your dog close to your table or position,
- avoid overcrowded situations,
- follow the instructions of the staf
Urban beaches and coastline
The coastline of Naples stretches from Mergellina to Bagnoli, featuring rocky areas, beach establishments and a few small stretches of public access to the sea.
Within the municipal area, there are currently no officially designated public beaches specifically for dogs.
It is therefore advisable to:
- Check any seasonal regulations or local ordinances before accessing the beach with your pet.
- Avoid the hottest hours of the day.
- Pay attention to rocky cliffs and seabeds.
For those travelling with a dog, the pedestrian waterfront promenade often represents the simplest and safest way to enjoy the sea while staying in the city.
Climate and practical advice
Naples enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot and sunny summers. If you are travelling during the summer months:
- Opt for walks in the early morning or late afternoon.
- Always carry water with you.
- Keep in mind that the lava stone paving in the historic centre can become very hot during the middle of the day.
Throughout the year:
- Make sure your dog is microchipped.
- Carry an up-to-date health record, especially if travelling from abroad.
- Respect local coexistence rules in the more crowded neighbourhoods.
