The entire district took its name from the magnificent Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, founded in the 17th century in an area once located just outside the ancient city walls. In this place, popular devotion and charitable impulses intertwined for centuries: the majestic adjoining complex became an important female boarding school, a refuge and place of education for generations of young girls (named after Princess Maria Clotilde of Savoy following the Unification of Italy).
Crossing the 18th-century facade redesigned by Camillo Lionti means taking a dive into the pure splendor of the Neapolitan Baroque. The Latin-cross, single-nave interior is a theatrical triumph shaped by the sculptural and decorative genius of Giovan Domenico Vinaccia, who redesigned its altars and floors. Looking up, you are captivated by an invaluable art gallery, whose canvases feature masterpieces by giants of the Neapolitan School such as Andrea Vaccaro and Luca Giordano, the latter being the author of a sublime Immacolata in the left transept, not to mention the rich pictorial cycle by Andrea Malinconico. The Church of the Miracles is not only a monumental treasure but a spiritual beacon that, over the centuries, has managed to transform a border area into a beating heart of the city, reminding us that in Naples, faith always translates into beauty, welcome, and rebirth.
