This is not just a scientific headquarters; it is the dream of the Enlightenment given form. Its construction was commissioned in 1812 by Joachim Murat (Gioacchino Murat), who desired a prestigious institute for his capital that could compete with the great European observatories. The result is a masterpiece of Neoclassical architecture, an elegant and solemn building designed to be isolated from the chaos and turned exclusively toward the sky.
Today, that dream is more alive than ever. The Observatory is the Naples headquarters of INAF (National Institute for Astrophysics), a place where researchers continue to study galaxies and planets.
But for the traveler, the greatest thrill is entering the Museum of Astronomical Instruments (MuSA). It is a journey into human patience and ingenuity.
Walking through these halls means finding yourself face to face with ancient telescopes that look like sculptures, intricately designed celestial globes, and calculating instruments that made it possible to map the universe. And then, there is the most precious treasure: the chance to admire one of the first, extremely rare editions of Copernicus's De revolutionibus orbium coelestium, the book that forever changed our place in the cosmos.
Visiting the Capodimonte Astronomical Observatory is a dual experience: it is looking up to question the stars, and looking down to fall in love, once again, with one of the most poignant views of Naples.
