To descend here means traveling back to the 2nd century AD, into a labyrinth of vast and solemn spaces that open up on two superimposed levels. Unlike the more famous Roman catacombs, their corridors are wide and airy, designed not for hiding, but to accommodate the faith of a growing community.
But what makes this place the spiritual heart of underground Naples is the indissoluble bond with its patron saint. Originating as a burial site for a wealthy pagan family and later donated to the Christian community, these catacombs became the center of worship when, in the 5th century, they welcomed the mortal remains of San Gennaro.
From that moment, they became a sanctuary and a pilgrimage destination, attracting bishops and nobles who wished to rest alongside the martyr. Strolling among the hypogean basilicas and arcosolia (arched burial alcoves), one discovers priceless art treasures: delicate mosaics, Byzantine frescoes, and what is considered the oldest known depiction of San Gennaro—a face that has been observing visitors for over 1,500 years.
Today, thanks to an extraordinary recovery project run by the youth of the Rione Sanità itself, visiting the Catacombs of San Gennaro is a luminous experience: an immersion in the faith that shaped the city and in the beauty that, from underground, has successfully generated new life on the surface.
