The Catacombs of San Gaudioso are a mystical labyrinth that developed around the tomb of an African bishop, Gaudiosus, who arrived in Naples in the 5th century. But what makes this place unique in the world is not just its Early Christian antiquity, with its delicate frescoes and symbols; it is the ritual that took hold in the 1600s.
Walking through its corridors, you encounter a powerful and surreal sight: human skulls embedded directly into the tufa walls. Beneath them, large frescoes depict the bodies of the noble deceased, dressed in their finest clothes or with the tools of their trade.
This macabre memento mori was part of a complex ritual: the bodies were placed in the Scolatoi (draining seats) to "drain," and only later was the skull preserved and displayed as a warning about the vanity of earthly life. The artist Giovanni Balducci, commissioned to paint these bodies, ultimately asked to be buried here himself, becoming part of the very gallery he had helped to create.
Today, visiting San Gaudioso is not a somber experience. Thanks to the care and passion of the neighborhood's youth, it is a fascinating journey into the indissoluble bond between life and death, a powerful narrative that unites the "cult of souls" with the rebirth of an entire district.
