The Church of San Severo fuori le mura (outside the walls), with its adjoining former convent, stands in a small, picturesque square, guarding memories since the origins of Christianity. Its foundations, in fact, rest directly on the Catacombs of San Severo, an intimate and fascinating early Christian hypogeum where, in the 4th century, the remains of the eponymous Neapolitan bishop were laid to rest.
But the true revolution of this monumental space lies in its vibrant present. Crossing the entrance of the 17th-century Cappella dei Bianchi, located inside the nave, means finding yourself in the presence of a contemporary masterpiece that takes your breath away: the Figlio Velato (The Veiled Son). Created by the brilliant sculptor Jago, this marble statue renews the allure of the famous Veiled Christ to tell the story of the innocent suffering of our time, becoming a beacon of light and hope. Entrusted to the care of the community's youth, the San Severo complex is today an extraordinary creative workshop (even hosting a music recording studio), a magical place where ancient spirituality, modern art, and social redemption merge into a single, incredibly powerful voice.
