Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata (of the Nunziatella)
On the hill of Pizzofalcone, the mythical Monte Echia where the millennial history of Naples began, hides a place where martial rigor meets the pure ecstasy of art.
The Church of the Nunziatella—affectionately called this by the Neapolitan people with a diminutive that betrays their intimate devotion—is today the spiritual heart of the famous Scuola Militare Nunziatella (Nunziatella Military School), founded in 1787 by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon and considered one of the oldest and most prestigious academies in the world.
Yet, the soul of this church is rooted in an even more remote past, when it was built at the end of the 16th century as a novitiate for the Jesuit fathers. Crossing its portal means experiencing a thrilling contrast: leaving behind the severe red uniforms of the cadets and the rigor of the parade ground, you are suddenly overwhelmed by a dizzying display of Neapolitan Baroque. The architecture, redesigned by the genius of Ferdinando Sanfelice, serves as a stage for a triumph of polychrome marbles, gilded stuccos, and above all, the grandiose vault frescoes painted by Francesco De Mura. Visiting the Nunziatella means discovering a proud and noble corner of Naples, where the sense of duty and the pursuit of absolute beauty have coexisted in perfect harmony for centuries.
