Pontifical Royal Basilica of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli
In the heart of the vast Piazza Municipio, thousands of people hurry past each day in front of the imposing façade of Palazzo San Giacomo, the seat of the Municipality of Naples. And yet…
... Yet, very few know that this 19th-century building literally swallowed up and protected, like a treasure chest, an intact fragment of Spanish territory. The Basilica of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli is a place where time stopped in 1540, when the powerful Viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo decided to build this church (attached to a hospital for Iberian soldiers) to celebrate the greatness of the Spanish crown.
Still administered today by the Real Hermandad de Nobles Españoles de Santiago (Royal Brotherhood of Spanish Nobles of Santiago), crossing the doors of this basilica means leaving the administrative frenzy of the modern city behind to immerse yourself in a rare and pure masterpiece of the Neapolitan Renaissance. The sober and solemn interior culminates in the grandiose funerary monument of Don Pedro de Toledo, sculpted by the master Giovanni da Nola: a work of exceptional beauty positioned right behind the main altar. Visiting San Giacomo degli Spagnoli is not just an artistic discovery, but a journey into the heart of that viceregal era which traced the streets, the districts, and the very soul of the Naples we experience today.
