Museum of Ethnoprehistory “Alfonso Piciocchi”
There is an iconic fortress floating on the sea, a symbol of Naples: Castel dell’Ovo. But among its sun-kissed ramparts, the castle guards a secret, an unexpected journey into deep time and across space. It is the “Alfonso Piciocchi” Museum of Ethnoprehistory.
Managed with passion by the Naples chapter of the Club Alpino Italiano (Italian Alpine Club), this museum is a true "cabinet of curiosities" overlooking the Gulf. It is a place that creates a powerful contrast: while the blue of the Mediterranean sparkles outside, inside, an exploration into the roots of humanity unfolds.
The exhibition is a dual journey: one into Prehistory, with artifacts recounting humanity's first steps in Europe and Italy, and one around the globe. The halls dedicated to Ethnography are an atlas of distant cultures, a succession of African masks, artifacts from Oceania, findings from the Americas, and pieces from Asia.
Visiting this museum means discovering that Naples' most famous icon is not just a fortress on the sea, but also a treasure chest that, in its heart of tuff stone, encloses the entire history of the world.
