With its immense semi-circular colonnade, designed by Leopoldo Laperuta, the basilica does not just occupy a space: it creates it. It is a monumental embrace that frames the square, dialoguing with the Royal Palace opposite.
More than a church, it is a symbol of rebirth. Its story is a solemn vow sculpted in stone. It was commissioned by King Ferdinand I of Bourbon as a majestic ex-voto to the saint, an act of thanksgiving for having regained the kingdom after the Napoleonic decade. The inscription on the pediment leaves no doubt: "FERDINANDUS I EX VOTO A MDCCCXVI".
It is considered one of the most important and purest examples of Neoclassical architecture in Italy. The architect, Pietro Bianchi, was openly inspired by the magnificence of the Pantheon in Rome: this is recognisable in the pronaos with its mighty Ionic columns and, above all, in the spectacular interior.
Upon entering, one is enveloped by the perfection of the rotunda, a vast circular space where the gaze inevitably travels upwards, towards the majestic coffered dome that rises over 50 meters.
The high altar is a masterpiece of semi-precious stones and lapis lazuli, designed by Ferdinando Fuga and transferred here from the Church of Santi Apostoli. Among the numerous artworks housed in the chapels, a canvas by Luca Giordano also stands out (although other works by him were transferred elsewhere).
But more than any single work, it is the ensemble that takes one's breath away. San Francesco di Paola is the symbol of a king's return, the Pantheon of Naples, and the iconic backdrop for every event, concert, and moment experienced in the heart of the city.
