The Church of Sant'Anna di Palazzo (historically also known as Rosario di Palazzo) is a monumental treasure chest holding some of the most moving pages of the city's history. Founded at the end of the 16th century to celebrate the Christian victory at the famous Battle of Lepanto, the church astonishes those who enter: leaving the noise of the alleys behind, you find yourself immersed in a spectacular interior, where precious stuccos and the brilliant architectural inventions of artists like Domenico Antonio Vaccaro triumph.
However, the true magic of Sant'Anna di Palazzo lies in the extraordinary lives that crossed paths within these naves. It was precisely at this baptismal font that the brilliant painter Luca Giordano received his first sacrament; and it was before this very altar that, in 1778, the courageous Eleonora Pimentel Fonseca, a prominent figure and absolute heroine of the 1799 Neapolitan Republic, celebrated her marriage. Having survived bombings and the ravages of time, and enriched by artworks saved from a nearby namesake church that was destroyed, Sant'Anna di Palazzo is an unmissable place where popular faith, great art, and the indomitable memory of revolutionary Naples continue to vibrate in perfect harmony.
