It is not simply a museum dedicated to elegance or the history of costume: it is a place where fashion becomes a social, cultural and productive narrative.
Through garments, embroidery, lacework, gloves, hats, bags, shoes and textile artefacts, the museum reveals a Naples connected to tailoring, craftsmanship, women’s education and the ability to transform artisanal practice into culture.
A foundation created for women
The history of the site dates back to the 17th century.
The Fondazione Mondragone takes its name from Elena Aldobrandini, Duchess of Mondragone, who founded here in 1655 the Retreat for Virgins and Oblate Matrons.
The institution was created to welcome women from impoverished noble families who did not wish to take religious vows, at a time when convent life was often the only option available to women without financial means.
After the unification of Italy, the Royal Institute of Mondragone continued its educational mission as a girls’ boarding school.
This origin makes the museum particularly compelling: fashion is not presented solely as aesthetics, but also as a story of women, education, identity and emancipation.
The collections
The museum traces the history of fashion across a broad timeline, from the 16th century to the present day, recounting gradual and radical transformations in clothing, taste, silhouette and the practices connected to self-representation.
The collection offers insight into the history of women’s emancipation through the way clothing reflects social roles, freedom, constraints and change.
It preserves garments, accessories, ancient, modern and contemporary textiles, altar frontals, liturgical vestments, embroidery, lacework and sacred furnishings.
Among the highlights are:
- the Fausto Sarli Collection
- the Livio De Simone Collection
- the Caracciolo Collection
- the Buccafusa Collection
This heritage reveals two souls of the city: on one side the world of haute couture and tailoring, on the other the manual expertise of embroidery, lace-making, textiles and applied arts.
A Naples to wear and to read
Visiting the Museum of Fashion Naples means discovering a city that tells its story not only through palaces, churches and panoramas, but also through what is worn, embroidered, preserved and passed down.
Here, clothing becomes a document, fabric becomes memory and accessories become clues to a way of life.
It is an ideal stop for anyone wishing to explore the Naples of tailoring, craftsmanship, female creativity and applied arts: a city capable of transforming material into identity.
